New Lectionary

On the weekend of the first Sunday of Advent (1st December 2024) the Catholic Church introduced a new edition of the Lectionary, and we started using it for our Masses at OLSD.

This significant update marks the culmination of years of meticulous work to enhance the liturgical experience for the faithful. The new Lectionary will feature the English Standard Version – Catholic Edition of the Bible and the Abbey Psalter, offering a more accurate and spiritually enriching translation of the Scriptures.

Key Features of the New Lectionary:

  • Enhanced Readability: The text is typeset in an updated version of the Stone font with rubrics in red, set in sense lines for ease of proclamation.
  • Study Aids: In-line verse numbers simplify cross-referencing for preaching and study.
  • Updated Calendar: Includes a complete Proper of Saints with new saints and updated national calendars for England, Scotland, and Wales.
  • Musical Settings: New music settings for Gospel Sequences.

The Parish has purchased the following (supported through the generous donations of parishioners and whose names will be acknowledged):

  • Four volume Ambo edition at the cost of £173 per book. The standard Lectionary for parishes, bound in deluxe padded leather with gold blocking and multiple ribbon markers. for use in the church.
  • Four-volume study edition (at a cost of £62 per book) to use for liturgy planning.
  • Book of the Gospels: A high-quality large volume for processions and special liturgies at a cost of £395.

On Saturday 30th November 2024 at 12.00 noon, Deacon Paul Evans, Martin Wood, James Fitzpatrick-Ellis and Kevin Moturi were present with Fr Anthony for the ritual of the blessing of our New Lectionaries.

The introduction of the new Lectionary aims to deepen the faithful’s understanding and love of the Word of God, enhancing the liturgical experience and providing a more faithful translation of the Scriptures.
